Saint Croix holidays, US Virgin Islands Vacation rentals - condos & villas to rent on St Croix

Until 1917, Saint Croix and the other Virgin Islands were ownned by Denmark and prior to that, the French, Spanish and English. With this rich colonial history, the islands are full of tradition and mixed cultures originating centuries ago which make them a fascinating part of the Caribbean to visit.

Away from the beaches, one of the popular tours is the Historic Trail where you can explore many of the 200+ cultural sites including old sugar plantations and windmills dating back to the colonial days.

Whilst not as well known as St Johns, Saint Croix is the largest island and is equally stunning. There is every type of water activity on offer and during the evenings, there is a good selection of bars, restaurants and evening entertainment in the main towns of Christiansted and Frederiksted (named after Danish Kings).

Best beaches & scuba diving

Saint Croix has magnificent beaches which are on a par with the best in the Caribbean. The sea is shallow, gentle and teeming with tropical fish - perfect for swimming, snorkeling and sailing.

For scuba diving, Cane Bay Reef, Davis Bay and Salt River Bay are all popular spots but for something a little different, the Wall with 13,000 foot drop-offs in places runs along the entire north shore and can be reached from the beach or dive boat.

Saint Croix has a tropical climate with average temperatures of 83°F throughout the year. Between March and June, the weather is normally dry and is the best time to visit for a holiday with the self catering holiday accommodation prices much lower than in the peak December to February months. The hurricane season runs from July to October where humidity is at its highest due to the frequent tropical showers and high temperatures which can creep in to the mid thirties.

Festivals and events

The people of Saint Croix like their festivals so if you are fortunate enough to be on the island, there is a high probability that a carnival or sporting event will be on at the same time.
